Name released in snowmobile fatality

BURNETT COUNTY – On Friday, March 9, 2018 the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a snowmobile crash at Trail 45 near West River Road in the Town of Anderson.  Upon arrival, responders located snowmobile crash site.

The male operator of the snowmobile was pronounced dead at the scene by the Burnett County Medical Examiner.

The victim was identified Monday, March 12, as 58-year-old Patrick Norton of Mounds View, Minn.

According to the DNR, Norton was traveling along and lost control of his snowmobile, was ejected and contacted a tree with his head.  He died at the scene. The accident occurred at about 1 a.m. but was not reported until 9:44 a.m. on Friday, March 9.  There was minimal damage to the snowmobile and it was unclear what caused him to lose control.

The DNR wishes to remind all snowmobilers that trail conditions are rapidly changing and while this incident is still under investigation, we wish that everyone travel with a safety mindset especially at night, always take a buddy with you be certain to tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. – Gary King
