Fatal hit and run claims Amery woman’s life

AMERY—A 50-year-old Amery woman died yesterday from injuries she suffered in a hit-and-run accident that occurred Friday, Feb. 9, in the City of Amery.
According to law enforcement, the fatal accident occurred at about 6:35 p.m. when Lisa Allen, 50, of Amery, was crossing Keller Avenue from west to east when she was struck by a vehicle being driven southbound on Keller Avenue. The driver stopped briefly and then continued southbound from the scene.
After the accident Allen was in critical condition and taken by air ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Witnesses to the accident described the suspect vehicle as a Green 2001 Saturn with Wisconsin license plates, which were found to be registered to a Michael George, 59, of Altoona.
The suspect vehicle and suspect were later located in Woodville, which resulted in George being taken into custody for OWI second and hit-and-run causing injury. George was transported to the Polk County jail.
On Monday, Feb. 12, the Ramsey County medical examiner advised local law enforcement that Allen had died of injuries suffered in the accident. The news release notes that the charges are likely to be upgraded to hit and run causing death.
The accident and investigation were handled by the Amery Police Department with the assistance of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Woodville Police Department, St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, the Amery Fire Department and Amery Ambulance Service.
The incident remains under investigation.
