OGILVIE, Minn. – Six tournament champions highlighted a first place for the St. Croix Falls wrestling team at a tournament held in Ogilvie, Minn., Saturday, Jan. 6. There were nine teams competing at the tournament.
“I thought we wrestled well. After coming off the Northern Badger it is always challenging to get ready to wrestle well in the first tournament back. The boys did well to stay consistent. It is nice to wrestle in a tournament in Minnesota and see new competition and kids we have not wrestled before,” said Saints coach Dan Clark.
Tournament champions included Luke Thaemert at 106 pounds, Garrett Bergmann, 145, Austin McCurdy, 152, Luke Clark, 170, Brandon Bastin, 195, and Tanner Gaffey at heavyweight.
One of the biggest highlights of the day, according to coach Clark, was Garrett Bergmann, who was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler.
“He took first place in a loaded weight and beat two state qualifiers along the way,” said Clark.
At 160, Clay Carney reached a milestone with his 100th career win. He reached the finals round and ended in second place overall.
“A great accomplishment, especially considering he missed half of his junior year with an injury,” said Clark.
Other Saints wrestlers placing at the tournament included Graidy Guggisburg, fourth place, 113; Zack Clark, third, 120; Logan Yira, fifth, 126; Bennett Bergmann, third, 132; Caleb Steffen, sixth, 138;
McKinnley Erickson, fifth, 182; and Trevor Warner, fourth, 220.
