SCF girls finish third
SHELL LAKE – It was a perfect night for a race in Shell Lake on Tuesday, Oct. 10, for the Lakeland Conference cross-country meet. Even better for the Unity boys, as they wrapped up the regular season with a conference title. Unity totaled 62 points, and Webster finished second overall with 68, followed by Grantsburg, 80; Cameron, 96; Clear Lake, 132; Birchwood, 142; St. Croix Falls, 169; Lake Holcombe/Cornell, 218; Shell Lake, 250; and New Auburn, 283.
The Unity boys were led by Cullen Feist, who finished fourth overall with a time of 18:14, Soren Vos Benkowski took 10 th with a time of 19:00, and Caleb Vos Benkowski took 13 th with a time of 19:10. All three earned all-conference honors since they finished in to top 16.
Other Eagles runners included Dylan Kern with a time of 20:04, Daniel Sorensen, 20:10; Nick Paulsen, 20:21; Asher Cress, 20:50; Blane Tendrup, 20:54; Thomas Cable, 22:53; and Liam Dueholm, 33:04.
There were three Webster boys who finished in the top 16 to earn all-conference honors including Hunter Erickson, who led the team with a time of 18:26, and placed sixth overall. Coming in seventh overall was Joey Formanek with 18:36, and Mason Schaaf placed eighth with a time of 18:42.
“Eleven kids giving it their all pretty much sums up the second place conference team. You guys were fun to watch,” coach Roy Ward told his boys. “I know you have what it takes to make it beyond sectionals. All a coach can ever ask is that you give it everything you got. I am looking forward to my favorite meet of the year, sectionals.”
The Division 3 sectionals race will be held in Drummond on Friday, Oct. 20, with the girls race beginning at 4 p.m., and the boys race to follow at 4:45 p.m. Teams heading to Drummond include Webster, Grantsburg, Frederic/Luck and Unity. The St. Croix Falls country team will also compete in the Division 3 sectionals, but they will be traveling to Boyceville on Saturday, Oct. 21. The girls race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the boys at 11:45 a.m.
For the Grantsburg boys it was a third-place finish and three athletes finishing in the top 16 to earn all-conference honors in Shell Lake. Joey Duncan led the team with a time of 18:57, and ninth overall. Nate McKinley took 11th overall with a time of 19:06, and Joseph Ohnstad was 16th with a time of 19:24.
St. Croix Falls took seventh overall with sophomore Trevor LaMirande finishing strong in third place overall with a time of 18:05. Along with LaMirande earning all-conference honors, Saints freshman Mason Peer took 14th overall with a time of 19:12.
For Frederic/Luck, freshman Nolan Johnson just missed an all-conference spot with 18th place overall and time of 19:41. Chase Rowe had a time of 21:22.
The Cameron Comets were the front-running team among the Lakeland Conference girls contenders in Shell Lake on Tuesday. There were seven complete teams including second-place Shell Lake, followed by St. Croix Falls, Webster, Clear Lake, Bruce and Prairie Farm.
Among the top-16 all-conference honorees there were two girls who made it from St. Croix Falls including Anna Klein, who was fourth overall with a time of 21:27, and Autumn Hansen, who was 12th with a time of 23:01.
Webster’s Sam Nelson earned all-conference honors with an eighth-place time of 21:46.
For Frederic/Luck, Elaine Lahti took 30th overall with a time of 24:58, and Rose King had a time of 27:08.
