SHELL LAKE – The Lakers beat the Washburn/Bayfield/South Shore Steelheads 64-20 in a homecoming game on Friday, Sept. 29. The win will go down as a 2-0 win because the injury-ridden Steelheads were unable to put a full team together. The game was an eight-man game, giving both teams the opportunity to play.

Shell Lake took an early lead when running back Carter Lawrence broke through the defense and ran 61 yards for a touchdown. Sean Heckel ran for the two-point conversion. Carter had 122 yards and four touchdowns for the game. Heckel had two touchdowns on 129 yards rushing. He averaged 12.2 yards a carry. Zach Jensen had 61 yards rushing and Nick Udovich had one touchdown on 18 yards rushing. Quarterback Nick Kraetke had two touchdown passes and 61 yards passing.

Shell Lake went on to win 64-20, but the game will go down as a 2-0 win for Shell Lake as they played an eight-man football game.

The homecoming game was made possible when Washburn/Bayfield/South Shore made the long trip to Shell Lake. The Steelheads have forfeited all of their games this year due to low player turnout. They will be going to eight-man football next year. Shell Lake is looking at eight-man football next year as well and they will be making a decision this fall.

Shell Lake is 2-2 this season in the Lakeland North Conference. They have two games left in this season and they could finish 3-3 if they are victorious over St. Croix Falls in their last game. They will go up against the Grantsburg Pirates on Friday, Oct. 6. The Pirates are undefeated this year and should make a Division 6 run in the playoffs.
